THERE were tears, laughter and fond memories galore as viewers tuned into a programme which showcased Bolton's iconic dance hall.

The first episode of You Make Me Feel Like Dancing aired on Tuesday evening, following choreographer Jack Murphy as he attempts to realise his dream to reopen Bolton's Astoria Palais De-Danse, Bridge Street, for one night only and make ballroom a national pastime once again.

The programme set Twitter alight and the hashtag #YouMakeMeFeelLikeDancing was trending on the social media website.

Liz @lizzipy wrote: "Absolutely awesome! Really enjoyed watching. Smiled all the way though and cried a little. Go on Bolton."

Shan Wilkinson @shanwilkinson2 said: "They have just subtitled a Bolton pensioner!!"

Bhavisha Kukadia @BhavishaKukadia said: "Such typical Bolton behaviour on this programme — love it!"

Marie eaton smith @marie1026 said: "What a lovely inspirational programme. Love it, and hats off to those lovely people of Bolton."

Tina Gandhi @TinaGandhi1 said: "Bolton on the telly box makes me smile."

And Claire Godwin @ClaireGodwin1 said: "Loved You Make Me Feel Like Dancing and want to move to Bolton! Laughter and tears tonight."

In Tuesday's episode, Jack met older couples but, tomorrow, he is targeting Bolton’s younger generation.

Can he persuade them to dance arm in arm? And will they observe the dance hall etiquette where women were asked to dance — and booze was banned?

You Make Me Feel Like Dancing is on BBC2 tomorrow at 9pm.
