A TEAM of quiz fans from Bolton Lads and Girls Club hope to crack the brain power of the Eggheads when they appear on the popular TV game show.

A group of six staff from the club filmed their appearance on the quiz show on Wednesday at the BBC studios in Glasgow.

They are sworn to secrecy and will not be able to reveal how they have performed until the show appears on TV some time later this year, thought to be August or September.

Paul Griffiths, external funding manager at the club, one of the six strong team, said: "We really enjoyed the filming. It has been really exciting, we were all sorting out what we were wearing beforehand, and were swotting up and doing some last minute revision."

Mr Griffiths said the club was approached by producers of the show, and after they received a positive response from members of staff they decided to take the plunge.

In the show, challengers take on a team featuring five of the country's brainiest quizzers, including Judith Keppel, who won the first million pounds on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

Each player goes head to head with an egghead on a given subject, and Mr Griffiths said he is confident the lads and girls club team have all bases covered.

Speaking before the filming, he said: "I would be happy with food and drink or geography, but I would hate science. Luckily one of the team knows his science, so hopefully we have got a wide range of knowledge."

Mr Griffiths added that he was worried about coming up against one egghead in particular, Kevin Ashman, considered to be the greatest quizzer in the world.

He said: "They are all really good, but Kevin comes to mind. He never seems to have a bad day. We won't know until we get there who we face, because there are a few different eggheads. But they are the best at what they do."

The team is comprised of Mr Griffiths, Suneet Patel, a senior administrator, Jackie Robinson, a finance officer, Katherine Pendlebury, a mentoring co-ordinator, Kimberley Buckley, a recruitment co-ordinator, and Carly Brown, the operations director at the club's new Westhoughton Youth Project.

Teams challenging the Eggheads are made up of five players, and Carly has offered to be the reserve in case anyone falls ill.

Suneet and Kimberley are both regular quizzers at the Ainsworth Arms in Halliwell, and hope to put that experience into practice.
