BOLTON town centre was treated to scenes out of a TV show as emergency services showed how they rescue crash victims from their car.

Members of Greater Manchester Police, Bolton Central fire station and North West Ambulance Service lit up Victoria Square with their sirens as they showcased their roles in a crash situation where two cars had collided.

Police “arrested” the driver of a Nissan Almera on suspicion of drink driving and a girl was rescued from a Ford Ka by firefighters - both performance students from Bolton College - while fire watch manager Phil Dearden talked the crowd through the process.

He said: “We talk about the golden hour. A victim’s chances are greatly improved if we get them out within that time.”

After the crew took the door and roof off the car, police checked the scene for any dangers that might have been lying about while paramedics treated the “patient”.

Father-of-two Stephen Doughty, aged 43, said: “It was great to see close up what the emergency services do on a regular basis to save lives. It makes you realise not only how much they do, but also how dangerous it is.”
