Subject to stress the importance of citizenship

PUPILS in Watford schools will learn how to become better citizens this term, as citizenship claims a place on the official school timetable for the first time.

The subject, which a number of local schools have already incorporated into lessons, aims to educate pupils on the core issues within society, and the vital role they as individuals play.

While studying citizenship, pupils will be encouraged to form their own opinions and express them.

Further support is available to teachers trying to implement the new subject, with the launch of The Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) Citizenship Resource Pack, aimed at pupils currently commencing Key Stage 4.

The pack was designed and constructed following a recent survey conducted by CIS which highlighted a significant number of pupils lack direction, with 32 per cent of Hertfordshire pupils having no idea of the career they wish to pursue.
