THREE thousand people from across the borough came together to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday tonight, at a firework display in Bolton.

Bolton Council hosted the “spectacular” firework display in Queens Park to mark the historic occasion.

Predicted to be “the most impressive firework display the town has ever put on” expectations were high for the monumental event.

Many spectators watched the display from the playing field off Spa Road, while others enjoyed the show from the comfort of their own homes, after assurances the fireworks would be visible from locations right across the borough.

Mother-of-one Helen Clarke, aged 46, of Farnworth, was with her family at the event.

The teacher said: "I am a royalist.

"It's what makes you British and is part of our history as a country.

"I think it's very important to celebrate.

Meanwhile Caroline Longworth, aged 35, of Breightmet, was enjoying the display with her two sons.

She said: "We are really enjoying it.

"I think it's good that the town has put this on for the Queen."

The fireworks, which began at 8.30pm were in the colours of the Union Flag- red, white and blue a patriotic tribute to Queen Elizabeth.

Among the crowds was three-year-old Poppy Lucas, who had earlier in the day held a party with her friends for the Queen's birthday, at her grandma's house, and had raised £180 for charity Macmillan.

Mum Kerrie Lucas, aged 38, of Farmworth, said: "We have been selling cards and had a raffle with about 20 of her friends.

"They all sang happy birthday to the queen too.

"I think it is important that children should know about the Queen and the royal family and we have been doing quite a lot at home this week for it too."

Seven-year-old Grace Pollard said she thought the fireworks were "amazing" but had also come to celebrate the Queen's special day.

The youngster from Harwood, added: "The gold ones were my favourite fireworks.

"And I know we are here for the Queen's 90th birthday.

"She is very old - but she is still working!"

Her Majesty became the longest-reigning British monarch on September 9 2015, when she surpassed the reign of her great great grandmother Victoria.

She is also the oldest reigning monarch by nine years followed by Queen Victoria and King George.

As well as the Bolton skyline lit up in the Queen’s honour the council also lit two beacons – on request from the Queen’s Pageant Master— one in Scout Road and another at Bolton Arena.
