8:57am Monday 4th June 2007

THE trial of a Bolton man charged with offences under the Terrorism Act is due to start today.

Omar Altimimi, aged 36, of Lansdowne Road, Bolton, will be appearing at Manchester Crown Court in the first counter-terrorism trial to be held outside London.

He is charged with four offences under Section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and one under Section 329 of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

Altimimi was arrested during raids at five addresses in Bolton last June.

He is accused of possessing articles - computer files - for a purpose connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.

A second man, Yusuf Abdullah, aged 29, has been charged with one offence under the Proceeds of Crime Act, and one under Section 24 of the Theft Act 1968.
