Dave Spikey will be in town on Saturday for the launch of a new book, Homelessness, written and published by students at Bolton Sixth Form College.

The comic will be at Waterstones in Deansgate at 10.30am to meet the students.

  1. Fans of The Jam can go ‘underground’ with “the UK’s most exciting and energetic tribute” to the group, when Mr Clean (Sounds of the Jam), rock up at Kiko.Rocks in Bradshawgate, for a night of Saturday entertainment from 8:30pm.

Then on Sunday, from 8.30pm, Brit Pop is revived with songs from the likes of Oasis and Blur courtesy of Word Gets Round.

Tickets are payable on the door.

  1. On Sunday, Bolton Steam Museum in Musgrave Road will be celebrating legendary steeplejack Fred Dibnah as the museum’s workshop is powered up for its open day. Fred's workshop engine will be brought back to life, after a 12 year rest, by his daughter Caroline at 11am.

  1. If you prefer sound to steam then head over to Horwich for Tigerfest III. The day of live music for those aged 18 and over at The Rabbit Saloon, in Lee Lane, features two stages, a BBQ and bar. Acts include reggae band Jeramiah Ferrari and Preston-based rockers The Capital. Doors open at 2pm and tickets cost £5.00, available at www.seetickets.com or from the bar.

  1. The feast of music continues on Monday with day-long festival May Day Calling at Bolton’s Blind Tiger. Former Stone Roses guitarist Azisz Ibrahim will be taking to the stage in Nelson Square, alongside a host of local live bands and performers. The day starts at 1pm with £4 entry on the door.

  1. Bolton will be booming with Bank Holiday events for both two-legged and four-legged friends alike.

Dog owners and fans can make their way to Turton Tower for the sixth annual Fair and Dog Show. Visitors can watch the pooches parade or try their hand at activities including archery. The event runs from 11am to 4.30pm, with £6 for admission.

Meanwhile, beauty queen Miss North West, aka Christina Cunningham, will be opening the first May Day Madness event at the Last Drop Village Hotel in Bromley Cross. The free family fun day runs from noon to 4pm and will include stalls, games and entertainment.

  1. Tradition lives on in Darcy Lever as crowds gather on Monday for the Mayday Parade. Starting at 12.30pm at The Lever Arms pub, the procession will head down to the Darcy Lever Gravel Pits at Moses Gate Country Park. The wildlife site will be hosting games, face painting, pond dipping, wildlife exhibition and a hunt for dragon’s eggs!
