PUBGOERS will be able to mull over the one of the biggest talking points of recent times with the help of two beers brewed specially for the EU referendum.

Dunscar Brewery, at Dunscar Business Park in Blackburn Road, has launched two one-off ales in the run-up to the important in-out vote on Europe on June 23.

It has produced Yeh Butt Bitter for those wishing to remain in the European Union and the No Butt Blonde for people who think the UK should leave.

Glenn Jones, managing partner, said: "We're trying something a bit quirky and trying to think outside the box.

"We want to stimulate debate because, while we're making it a fun promotion, it's a serious subject.

"It's getting exciting and it's good to have people talking about something else besides football and what's on the telly."

Chains like Wetherspoons and independent pubs around the North West are stocking the brewery's cask-only offering as far north as Cumbria and as south as Wrexham in Wales.

The clips for the bar pumps feature a ballot box design and accompanying posters and beer mats encourage customers to choose a side and place their order.

Undecided voters can choose a half-and-half mix of the two.

Mr Jones said: "The beers themselves are not particularly strong beers. The bitter is 4.1 per cent and the blonde is 3.8.

"The blonde will be a crisp, refreshing and slightly sweet and spicy flavour and that appears to be popular with younger drinkers who are switching from lagers to real ales.

"The bitter is a typical 'best bitter', a full body with a slight straw-like taste and a little floral note.

"We are beginning to have repeat orders, which shows people are ordering it by name and that's good to see."

Dunscar Brewery is keeping track of sales in a bid to shed some light on how the electorate may be swaying ahead of the crucial vote.

The firm will make an announcement on the eve of referendum about which beer has been more popular.

Mr Jones said: "We're trying to do a better job than the opinion polls to see if we can get any nearer than they did at the General Election.

"At the moment it's a few percentage points in favour of 'No Butt'. It's very early days though."
