ENTERPRISING students received the royal seal of approval – from Prince Andrew.

The trio, who are studying at the University of Bolton's School of Creative Technologies, received The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Award at a ceremony in Huddersfield to celebrate the next generation of entrepreneurs.

The awards go to the best business or social enterprise led by students or graduate entrepreneurs under 30 with the best business or social enterprise.

The three received the award for their work on Fixed Update Ltd – a student-led video game development business based at the university. They produced a game called Pathos.

The Bolton team won the Channel 4 Award worth £25,000 of business start-up support, supporting their game’s development to being published by the broadcaster.

Student Luke Norman, one of the team, said: "The awards day was a great experience. The university and organisers there were great hosts and it was good to see them all getting the recognition they deserve.

"It was nice to see young people like ourselves trying to change the world around them. There were a few companies based around growing your own food, which I thought was fantastic."

Simon Wiggins, Head of the School of Creative Technologies, said: "We’re exceptionally proud of our Pathos team.

"They are a fine example of what student talent, drive and commitment to a cause can achieve. They are creating an engaging, commercial game that showcases their talent and all that they learn with us, but they are also creating a game which has the potential to do tremendous good in the world. And that is admirable indeed."

The team also won the Design in Action Award for Commercial Potential, providing another £20,000 in financial support and mentoring.

Pathos is a non-violent minimalist puzzle adventure negotiating the foster care system and based on the character Pan is forced on an adventure, desperately trying to find her way home in a land full of unique and strange worlds.
