A LOCAL election candidate who was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman has been bailed.

Derek Fisher was arrested on Friday after an alleged incident in Osmund Avenue in Breightmet.

Mr Fisher, who lives in Hough Fold Way, Harwood, is standing for UKIP in the Tonge with the Haulgh ward in Thursday's Bolton Council elections.

It is understood that he owns a property in Osmund Avenue where the alleged incident took place.

Police were called to the scene at 3pm on Friday and arrested a man on suspicion of assaulting a woman before taking him into custody at Astley Bridge Police Station.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were contacted at about 3pm after reports of a neighbour dispute. When officers attended the scene they located a female who appeared to have suffered an assault.

“They arrested a male on suspicion of assault.”

The force has now confirmed that Mr Fisher has been released on bail until May 28 while further enquiries are carried out.
