A TEENAGE motorcyclist who says his life was saved by a Jamaica ginger cake now has a plentiful supply of his favourite snack.

After hearing how Reece Jefferies landed on his packed lunch after coming off his bike in a crash in Farnworth, McVitie's sent the 18-year-old a hamper full of cakes to help with his recovery.

The warehouse worker fractured his spine and also damaged his pelvis in the accident last week, but said the outcome could have been far worse if not for the fortuitously-placed cake, which he has kept in his fridge.

Reece, who took delivery of the hamper at his home in Hazel Grove, Ringley, on Friday morning, said: "It was very nice of them to send the hamper, I was amazed when they rang up the other day. There are 26 cakes, but they go out of date in August so we will have to be quick eating them.

"They sent me a little note to say 'get well soon' as well.

"I have been okay this week, but I still can't put my shoes or socks on. Whenever I try, I get a shooting pain in my back."

Having spent three days at Royal Bolton Hospital, Reece now faces at least eight weeks wearing a back brace, though it may take far longer than that for his spine to fully recover.

Jeremy Horton, head of marketing at McVitie’s Cake Company, added: "When we heard about Reece’s experience we got in touch straight away to send him a hamper of our Jamaica Ginger Cake — to send our ‘get well’ wishes, and to make sure he isn’t missing out on his favourite cake.

"We’re very pleased to hear that Reece is on the road to recovery."

The teenager was given the bad news on Friday that his beloved Honda Repsol bike, which he purchased for around £2,000 only a month ago, was a write-off.

But he remains keen to get back on the road as soon as he is fit enough.

He added: "The bike is a write-off, which I'm disappointed about, but once the insurance payment comes through I'm going to buy the exact same one and get back out there."
