JAPANESE skyscrapers and terraced housing in Bolton will rub shoulders in a new advert promoting Reebok trainers.

Scenes shot in Tokyo and Bolton will advertise a collaboration between Bolton-founded sportswear company Reebok and Tokyo-based Beams, a Japanese Western-style clothing company.

Images of Tonge Moor, Great Lever, Breightmet, Rivington and the town centre are all shown in the online video campaign aimed at the Japanese market.

The advert features Stockport-born Nick Stansfield in alternating shots sampling the hustle and bustle of smoggy Tokyo and walking around Bolton on a cold December day.

Director of the advert Glenn Kitson, who was born and raised in Bolton but now lives in London, put Reebok and Beams in contact with each other himself for the limited-edition trainer.

The Reebok Classic X Beams SS16 trainers shown in the advert are part of a larger collaborative collection called ‘Gentlemen Sport’ which is only available in shops in Japan.

He says the concept for the advert was inspired by his hometown and the pride he feels from being from there.

The former Canon Slade student said: “We’ve never been shy about where we’re from. It’s about being from Bolton, holding your head up high.

“No matter where your go in the world, never forget where you’re from. I'd like to give lads from estates like mine a leg up. You don't have to work in a factory or a call centre, you can be creative."

Mr Kitson is one of the co-founders of creative agency The Rig Out which produces film, adverts, photography and a magazine.

The former student of Arts University Bournemouth added: “There are loads of people I’ve known from Bolton that are as creative as the people I’ve met at university. They are capable, they can aspire to do it. When I get the chance to do stuff in Bolton, I’ll do it.”

He co-founded The Rig Out alongside pal Andy Bird in 2009 “as a reaction to other magazines that weren’t aimed at lads like me”.

The 39-year-old who left Bolton at 26, for London, said: “I wanted a change from all the magazines aimed at posh kids. But it’s not laddy, not like FHM.”

This is not the first time The Rig Out has featured Bolton in one of its Reebok adverts.

Their 2014 promotional film ‘Give Me Your Classics and I’ll Show You the Future’ also depicts scenes of suburban Bolton and Manchester city centre.
