THE first phase of work to transform shop fronts in a key town centre street has been completed.

Units including Newsbox, Greggs, Shuz4u, Redd and H&P Pawnbrokers have all had a new black bolt-on frame fitted, as well as a new roller shutter and new signage.

It is part of an overall £3 million council project to revitalise the thoroughfare and make it a more appealing gateway to the town centre.

£2 million is being spent on the shop fronts — with Lancashire-based construction firm Warden now starting work on the next block of units on that side of the street.

The businesses will not be forced to close while the work is being carried out — which is expected to take two months.

The remaining £1 million on the project is being spent on improving the street itself, with new paving, seating, street lights and trees.
