A SCHOOLGIRL is hoping to hit the £20,000 mark for charity — with her fourth annual dog show.

Scarlett Berry started her fundraising drive four years ago after advice from her vet to show she was passionate to pursue a future career in the field.

The 12-year-old from Westhoughton started by selling homemade dog biscuits and this soon escalated to organising a fundraising dog show.

Scarlett said: “I wanted to show that I was really keen to become a vet and my mum had bought me a dog bakery book so I decided that I was going to bake the biscuits and sell them for animal rescue charities.”

The youngster, from Redwood Road, expanded her fundraising ideas by launching an annual dog show which returns this year for its fourth year.

She said: “There’s so much work that goes in to putting the show on and I have lots of support from my mum.

“I started selling my biscuits at a show when I first started out and it’s just gone on from there. It’s getting bigger and bigger each year, this year we have 50 stalls.”

The show will be held at Central Park, Westhoughton, on June 4 from 11am until 4pm and will raise money for Rossendale Dog Rescue and Dogs Trust Merseyside.

In addition to the charity and refreshment stalls there will be 15 fun dog show classes for people to enter.

As Scarlett’s fundraising total nears £20,000 her mum Sarah Dunscombe-Berry said they never anticipated it going so well.

She said: “The fundraising has taken over our lives. It was all her idea to start selling the biscuits and I thought it was going to be a flop and I would have to give her some money and buy them all.

“But it’s all gone crazy and now we’re into the fourth year of the show.

“It’s gone way beyond anything we could have ever thought of, we’re really proud of what she has done.”

Scarlett said she had been amazed by the support she had received from local businesses ahead of the event.

She said: “People are so good and help me so much. It is amazing to think how many animals we have saved together.”
