BOLTON’S newest MP has rebelling against his own Government after backing an amendment to the Queen’s Speech.

Chris Green, Tory MP for Bolton West, signed the amendment which aims to ensure that the National Health Service is safeguarded from a controversial trade deal between Europe and the United States, known as TTIP.

With the amendment garnering cross-party support, Prime Minister David Cameron chose to avoid an embarrassing commons defeat and accept it — but it is being seen as another blow to his leadership supported by his own backbenchers, of which Mr Green is one.

This is not the first time the Bolton West MP has rebelled against the Government in the short time since his election last May.

In March he was one of 26 Tory rebels to join forces with Labour and the Scottish National Party in defeating Chancellor George Osborne’s plan to extend Sunday trading hours in England and Wales.

He is also a founding member of a new cross-parliamentary group which will lobby the Government on behalf of women affected by the acceleration of the state pension age.

Perhaps the biggest issue in which Mr Green has openly disagreed with David Cameron on is the UK’s membership with the European Union.

The Bolton West MP is a vocal and passionate campaigner for an ‘out’ vote in next month’s referendum — with the Prime Minister desperately fighting to ensure our membership of the EU remains.

Mr Green said taking stances against Government plans is all part of being a good constituency MP.

He said: “There are always going to be tensions and people pulling in different directions within a party and yes I have rebelled against the Government on several issues.

“There is a range of things that a backbench MP and a constituency MP should be doing — and that is what I am doing.”

He said his disagreements with Mr Cameron in no way impact on his faith in his leadership of the party or the country.

He added: “This is in no way a personal slight against David Cameron, it is all about the future of Britain and regardless of the result in next month’s referendum I look forward to seeing him continue as Prime Minister.”
