A YOUNG man "fuelled by drink and drugs" took part in a disturbance in the street that ended with the death of a Farnworth father.

Mark Carroll, aged 43, died in hospital after being found barely conscious in Burnham Walk in the early hours of November 21.

It is believed Mr Carroll fell ill after a confrontation with youths.

The post-mortem examination conducted by a Home Office pathologist determined he had severe heart disease which contributed to his death.

Reece Longworth was sentenced at Bolton Magistrates' Court on Friday after earlier admitting causing fear or provocation of violence on the evening of Mr Carroll's death.

The 18-year-old defendant is said to have "on November 21 used towards Mark Carroll threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause that person to believe that immediate unlawful violence would be used against him by any person, or to provoke the immediate use of unlawful violence by him whereby that person was likely to believe that such violence would be used, or it was likely that such violence would be provoked".

Longworth, of Wildman Lane, Farnworth, and previously of Trafford Street, Farnworth, was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months.

He was ordered to attend up to 10 days' rehabilitation activity and complete 100 hours of unpaid work and to pay an £80 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Magistrates noted this was a "tragic case due to course of conduct over a period of the time fuelled by drink and drugs".

Two other men — Brynn Wood, aged 20, of Vernon Street, Farnworth, and John Greenwood, aged 29, of St Peter's Terrace, Farnworth — face one count of causing fear or provocation of violence to Mr Carroll on November 21 last year.

They both denied the offence at Bolton Magistrates' Court on May 10 and were granted conditional bail to stand trial at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court on July 15.

There will be a pre-inquest review into Mr Carroll's death at Bolton Coroner's Court on July 4.
