MOTORISTS face three months of disruption as a £7 million resurfacing project is carried out on St Peter’s Way.

The whole length of the road in both directions — from the Kearsley roundabout to Topp Way — is being improved.

It will be closed daily from 7pm until 6am, from July 4 until September 30.

Motorists will need to use alternative routes during these times, which will be signposted. The road will be open as usual at all other times.

Council chiefs said they have decided to carry out the work overnight in an effort to minimise disruption and keep traffic moving.

Advanced warning notice boards have now been installed to give motorists as much notice as possible.

The £7.3 million improvement project is being largely funded by a £5.8 million government grant, which was awarded to the council after a successful bid last year.

Bolton Council will fund the remaining £1.5 million, which will enable the road to be fully resurfaced in both directions.

The cash was awarded to the council by Chancellor George Osborne last year, as part of an overall £17.8 million funding pot for local transport projects. Bolton Council’s £5.8 million award was the single biggest of the various projects.

As well as a complete resurfacing of the busy route — the money will also be used for maintenance work on the various bridges along the road.

Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Cllr Elaine Sherrington, said: “St Peter’s Way is a major route in and out of Bolton and resurfacing it will keep it in a good condition for years to come.

“We’ve thought carefully about how we do the resurfacing because it is such a key road and we are making every effort to minimise the disruption.

“The resurfacing is going to be a huge piece of work and this will mean overnight closures, which are not ideal and I’d like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

“We would also like to thank motorists, residents and businesses for their patience and co-operation.”
