A WIDOWER took his fundraising total to over £45,000 with his tenth annual golf day.

Oliver Keenan, 70, has hosted the day each year to raise money for Bolton and District Multiple Sclerosis Society.

His wife Winefride died at the age of 66, in 2011 — nearly 30 years after she was first diagnosed with MS — a neurological disease which attacks the nervous system.

His latest event hosted last Tuesday raised over £3,000 taking his total to over £45,000.

Mr Keenan, who lives in Daisy Hall Drive in Westhoughton, said: "I would like to thank everyone who took part, the sponsors, those who donated prizes and those that gave their time and effort to make it possible.

"Most of all to Peter Roberts and family for the free use of the course, that was presented in excellent condition by the hard working ground staff."

Mr Keenan also thanked the catering staff for the meal after the competition.

One hundred competitors took park in the event at Hart Common Golf Club, Westhoughton, and the winners with 46 points were Dave Speakman and Mark Longshaw.

Mr Keenan said: "People are very generous and it is a great day for a good cause.

"There are a lot of people suffering quietly with MS. It is not one of these illnesses that get a high profile and research is slow to find a remedy for it.

"But there is a lot of good work in Bolton in aid of MS and other charities that needs to be highlighted."

The MS Society funds research and provides information and support to MS sufferers and their carers.
