ROBBERS beat and stamped on the head of a sub-postmaster during a raid of a Radcliffe Post Office in a terrifying attack on Friday.

At around 2.15pm, the two robbers burst into the Black Lane Post Office, in Ainsworth Road, and confronted staff.

The sub-postmaster, who asked to remain anonymous, was working in the store at the time and was set upon by the masked men, who were demanding cash from the till.

The 28-year-old, who was behind the counter, was pulled into the main shop by the thugs, who were armed with a hammer and a crowbar, and was repeatedly stamped upon and hit.

The attack left him with a broken hand and bad injuries.

He said: "The delivery guy was leaving when these two guys pushed him and came inside.

"They came to the counter and started demanding money which I couldn't give to them.

"They were hitting my very badly, I was really scared. I didn't know what was going to happen.

"My hand is all broken, I have injuries to my head, chest and arms and my leg is also bad. I don't know how to handle it right now."

The cash-in-transit guard had just finished filling up the shop's external ATM machine when the attackers struck.

During his delivery the shop was secured with an automatic lock on the front door but, as the guard was leaving, the robbers pushed their way in.

A visiting Parcelforce courier was also in the store at the time of the attack.

His brother-in-law, who also asked not to be named, came to the scene shortly after and was horrified to see the attack on CCTV.

He said: "I was at work when my wife called me to say the Post Office had been raided.

"I couldn't believe what I saw, they dragged him out and stomped on his head three times."

The two men were said to be wearing dark clothing and balaclavas and escaped in a car driven by a getaway driver who waited outside while the heist was carried out.

Officers are still working to determine what was stolen from the office although it is believed they did not escape with any of the ATM money.

Anyone who witnessed the robbery or has information should call police on 101.
