RESIDENTS are calling for measures to help improve the safety of their road.

Veronica Malone and her daughter Claire were left devastated after a car crashed into their home on Friday night.

The mum and daughter say it is the second time their home has been hit by a speeding vehicle and now want action taken to improve the safety of the road.

Their home is located opposite the junction of Plodder Lane and 82-year-old Veronica says she is worried for her safety if nothing is done help stop speeding drivers.

She said: "I did feel safe but I don't feel safe now it's happened again.

"It's a mess this time. On Friday night we always sit in the front room but that night we didn't. If we had we would have been dead. Every window and ornament was smashed, all my stuff is gone. No one will sit in that front room again, it's like a mausoleum to us.

"It is beyond a joke. We have been here 38 years but we hadn't been here that long when a car knocked the wall down.

"Of all the crashes that have happened we have not had one person from Bolton Council come and see us. They are not interested in how we feel."

Mrs Malone walks with a stick and struggles to cross the road.

She says the busy 40 mile per hour road is impossible for her to navigate with no crossing point in walking distance and would like to see a controlled crossing point nearby, which may also help to calm traffic.

A council spokesman said they understood residents’ concerns and will look at the details of the accident, as they do with all road traffic accidents.

They added: "Enforcing of speeding motorists is a police matter.

"We have worked in partnership with other organisations previously to educate the public about the dangers of speeding and this is something we may look to explore again."

Hulton councillor Shafaqat Shaikh, who has previously campaigned for improved safety measures in St Helens Road, added: "I am very sorry to hear what has happened. We will raise the matter and see if any can be done."

Miss Malone, aged 39, said she would like to see Bolton Council spend some money on safety measures for the junction of Plodder Road and St Helens Road.

She said: "Something needs to be done about that junction. I didn't think something like this would happen again but it has.

"Every time you here a loud car engine you're on edge, we shouldn't have to live like that."

On Friday night three homes were damaged when two cars lost control and crashed into front gardens in St Helens Road.

A silver/grey Audi A4 crashed into the Malones' bay window causing damage to the front room, her car and the front door. Further along the road red Volkswagen Golf came to a halt in a garden, damaging the ground and breaking the garden wall.

Police say that the cars were seen “racing” at speed along Plodder Lane moments earlier and are appealing for information.
