FESTIVAL season is well and truly under way.

And although the mother of all festivals — Glastonbury — passed in a haze of music and mud at the weekend, there are many more closer to home still to enjoy.

From a free rock music festival to a Brazilian carnival, here we round up 12 festivals within an hour's drive of Bolton and Bury.

Rockprest, Preston

Rockprest 2016 — Saturday and Sunday (July 2 and 3)

The UK’s biggest free rock tribute festival comes to Moor Park in Preston, following a successful Boltfest in Queens Park in May.

The family-friendly event is free but is subject to a £2.90 booking Fee. Expect some of the biggest tribute acts in Europe on two stages, over two days of crowd-surfing, chorus-chanting, festival fun.

Festwich, Prestwich

The Prestwich version — Festwich — takes place in St Mary’s Park on July 30 and 31.

There will be tributes acts to bands including AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon.

Sounds of the City, Castlefield, Manchester

Acclaimed live artists are taking over Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl for Sounds Of The City next month. Opening the series on Friday July 1 for a special hometown show is Guy Garvey, from Elbow. He will be joined by Breightmet singer Badly Drawn Boy. The line-up for the rest of the series — Haçienda Classical on July 2; James Bay on July 6;

Stereophonics plus support Walking On Cars on July 7; Catfish And The Bottlemen on July 8 and The Last Shadow Puppets on July 10.

Beat-Herder, Ribble Valley

2016 will see Beat-Herder returning for its 11th year. Situated in the beautiful Ribble Valley, Lancashire, and described as a festival of beats and barminess, acts include Manchester rock legends James, folk-pop troubadour and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member Donovan, Swedish indie pop band Miike Snow, reggae giants Chronixx & Zincfence Redemption and German house maestros Booka Shade.

SOS Festival, Longfield Suite, Prestwich

Following the closure of Radcliffe Civic Suite, the venue for all eight previous SOS Festivals, the rock and metal event has a new home in Prestwich. The SOS Festival has grown into a three-day extravaganza since first coming to Radcliffe, and has brought in fans travelling from as far as mainland Europe, Canada, and even Japan to see the line-up of local and international bands. Kendal Calling, Lowther Deer Park, The Lake District

Having sold out their 10th birthday edition a whopping 19 weeks in advance last year, Kendal Calling returns to the beautiful Lake District in 2016 with huge headliners Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Rudimental, Madness and The Charlatans. Lytham Festival, Lytham Green

There's a whole host of entertainment in store for visitors to Lytham Festival, taking place from August 1 to 7 across a number of stages. There will be music from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Bryan Adams, Lawson, Collabro and Lemar. There will also be comedy and an outdoor cinema. Visit lythamfestival.com for the full line-up.

Brazilica Festival, Liverpool

The UK’s biggest Brazilian Samba Carnival will take place on the streets of Liverpool from July 15 to 17. Take the family and enjoy the atmosphere at the festival where you can sample Brazilian food, caipirinhas and Brazilian beer from the stalls around the square. Visit brazilicafestival.co.uk

Rebellion Festival, Winter Gardens, Blackpool

The iconic Rebellion Festival is set to return for its 20th year from August 4 to 7, simultaneously celebrating the 40th anniversary of the initial punk explosion in 1976. The line-up includes UK punk legends the Angelic Upstarts, pop-punk legends the Descendents, Dischord Records’ post-hardcore icons Dag Nasty and skate-punks JFA. Visit rebellionfestivals.com.

Creamfields, Daresbury, Cheshire

Following its 7th consecutive sell-out last year, the UK’s number one dance festival — Creamfields — returns this summer. With a 4th day added, the event in Daresbury, Cheshire, has officially become the world’s biggest electronic music festival. Acts include Calvin Harris, Tiestö, Avicii, Axwell & Ingrosso, Alesso, Hardwell, Sasha, Above & Beyond, Martin Garrix, Fatboy Slim, Chase & Status, Annie Mac, Hannah Wants, Steve Aoki, Eric Prydz, Knife Party, Mistajam, Armin van Buuren, Andy C, Roni Size and Pete Tong. Vintage by the Sea, Morecambe

Fashion designer Wayne Hemingway's event returns to Morecambe for its fourth season on September 3 and 4. Ramsbottom Festival, Ramsbottom Cricket Ground.

Big names including Gaz Coombes and Fun Lovin’ Criminals have been announced for this year’s Ramsbottom Festival. The event, which returns for its sixth year, will run from Friday, September 16, to Sunday, September 18, at Ramsbottom Cricket Ground. Coombes, best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist for Supergrass, will headline the Saturday night, and Fun Lovin’ Criminals will be the main act on the Sunday.
