EGG and spoon and sack races can only signal one thing — it's sports day.

And this week Bolton School's very young athletes took to the sports field as they battled it out on the pitch for the coveted trophy.

Parents, grandparents, siblings all gathered to cheer the year one and two children at Beech House Infant School.

Children were split into five teams — green, yellow, black or white teams.

They showed off their sporting skills in different activities.

These included the giant egg and spoon race, throwing tennis balls at the wickets, long jump and standing long jump, sprint races, throwing the howler for distance, a four-minute running challenge, throwing bean-bag balls into target nets, sack races and a football skills game.

The annual day ended with dramatic sprint finals on the 60-metre track.

All of the year two children competed as different countries in their sprint final races.

The yellow team were declared the winners of the Year One and Year Two Sports Day and were presented with the trophy.

Many parents joined in the sports day fun and took part in a foam javelin throwing competition, with the winners also receiving medals.

Nicola Donnelly, Bolton School Infant School PE teacher, said: "We have designed our sports days to be fun, exciting, challenging and rewarding.

"We want our children to engage in sport and an active lifestyle.

"The most important things about our sports days are celebrating achievement and encouraging everyone to join in.

"It teaches us incredibly important lessons about life such as the joy of triumph, but also about learning to be resilient when we lose, and to lose with grace.

“We have built into the ethos of our school the culture of respect, team-work and individual aspiration. We try to use sport to transform children’s lives from the very first day in school.

“All the children and parents thoroughly enjoyed the full programme of activities and had a wonderful afternoon with their friends.

"They had an amazing day."
