Hundreds of students and a former police chief constable descended on Bolton for the first of three days of graduation ceremonies.

Graduates from the school of technologies were the first to don their robes and hats at this morning’s ceremony.

They were joined by former Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Sir Peter Fahy, who was awarded an honorary doctorate of the university for his contribution to Greater Manchester and charitable work.

For the first time, the graduation celebrations are being held on campus at a graduate pavilion at The Sward.

Over the course of the next three days, the university is expected to welcome 2,500 students and their families and friends for six different ceremonies.

Speaking at the ceremony this morning, Chancellor - Professor Sir Ernest Ryder - said: “You are, in fact, now a part of history as this is the first time in our 12 years as a university that graduation has been held right here at the heart of campus.

“The University is proud to be recognised for its accomplishments, but everything we do is motivated by providing all that we can for our students, and we take the greatest pride in your success. You are great achievers and we wish you continued success in your future lives.”

Among the students making their way through the rain to the marquee this morning were friends and fellow Bachelor of Design with Honours in Special Effects graduates Victoria Jones and Francesca Hatch.

22-year-old Francesca, from West Sussex, said: “I loved my time at university. It’s been an absolutely great learning experience. The tutors have been great and it’s been a lot of fun.

“I’ve learnt a lot and feel prepared to take on the real world now!”

Also heading in flanked by his excited children was 50-year-old Mamadu Cande.

Originally from the West African country of Guinea Bissau, he has graduated with a foundation degree in Media Production.

“My wife and two children are here today and are really proud of me,” he said.

“It has been a brilliant time and I will be coming back in September to start my next degree.”

Ceremonies continue this afternoon for students of Bolton Business School and School of Law.
