A SHOCKED mother has told how an out-of-control car missed her partner by metres when it crashed into two other vehicles.

The black Vauxhall Astra was travelling northbound along George Street in Farnworth at 8pm on Sunday when the smash happened.

The driver and passenger fled on foot, abandoned their wrecked vehicle, and police are now trying to trace them.

Kellymarie Cropper said on social media: “I’m in massive shock to have learned that my children could have been without a father last night.

“A car speeding down George Street, Farnworth, and smashes in to other cars.

“A passenger ran off and driver was hurt. Just missed Michael whilst he was walking to work at 8pm. I’m absolutely shaken up and I’m so thankful that he is OK and I deeply hope the driver and passenger are OK too.

“People need to think of their actions that could cost lives, and cause hurt and sadness to others.”

Witnesses describe the Astra as being sliding sideways when it struck Vauxhall combi van parked in a driveway, spun off and smashed backwards into a parked red Ford Fiesta, shunting the Fiesta into a third parked car. All vehicles are thought to be write-offs.

The passenger got out and ran off straight away while residents and bystanders tried to stop the driver leaving.

They hesitated to physical restrain him due to the combination of his obvious head injury and his agitation and he took off before the police arrived at the scene of the collision near the junction with Medlock Close.

Witness Julie Longworth said: “I heard all three bangs and tyres screeching. I went outside, as did others.

“The passenger of the car did a runner, then me and my long-term friend who we were visiting ran to the driver, who was bleeding from a bad wound in the back of his head.

“He tried to drive off but my friend took his keys out of the ignition.”

North West Ambulance Service confirmed it received several 999 calls but did not attend since paramedics were deemed not to be required.

A spokeswoman for GMP said: “We were called just before 8pm to reports of a three-vehicle collision on George Street.

"A black Vauxhall Astra has collided with two vehicles, one of which was a stationary red Ford Fiesta.

“Two men in the Astra have left the scene before police could speak to them.

“One has headed towards Century Lodge. He is white, in his 20s and wearing black clothing.

“The other is white, in grey shorts and appears to have an injury to the back of his head.”
