SCHOOL’S out for the summer and as usual there is plenty going on in Bolton’s libraries and museums to keep children occupied in the coming weeks.

There will be a whole host of Roald Dahl activities taking place to mark this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, the theme of which is The Big Friendly Read to celebrate 100 years of the world’s greatest storyteller.

And children can also enjoy a carnival atmosphere as the world prepares for Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, children can watch creatures of the deep feeding at 1pm at Bolton Central Library’s aquarium, followed by craft sessions.

Dahl Days take place every day, apart from Wednesday and Sunday, from 10am onwards at Breightmet Library where they will be phizz-whizzing crafts, colouring sheets and a hunt for the frothbungling Roly Poly bird.

Children under eight must be accompanied by their own BFG.

This Thursday, from 2pm until 3pm at Westhoughton Library, children can enjoy a storytelling session and make their own pair of Big Friendly Giant’s ears.

Then on Saturday, July 30, children and their families can enjoy the fun of the circus from 11am with crafts, storytelling and circus skills.

Bromley Cross will be celebrating the forthcoming Olympics from August 8 to 15, where they will be a special trail, crafts and colouring competition.

A bug hunt is being organised at Smithills Hall on Wednesday, August 17, from 11am to noon and then again from 1pm until 2pm. Children can explore the grounds and find out which creatures have made their home there. To book a place, ring 01204 332211.

And on Friday, August 19, from noon until 3pm, children can enjoy a Roald Dahl adventure in the historic hall. They can listen to extracts from classic Dahl stories, take part in a craft session and explore the hall as they embark on an adventurous trail.

Beach fun is being organised for the very youngest children with a party as part of the toddler tales special at Harwood Library on August 22 from 2pm.

As part of Bolton’s Food and Drink Festival, Bolton Central Library will have a daily programme of children’s activities from joining the “grow gang” to visiting the wonderful world of Willy Wonka from August 26 to August 29.

A Bolton Council spokesman said: “There are lots of family friendly activities going on throughout the summer holidays in all our libraries and museums, many of which are free.
