THEY say it takes two to tango but in the case of this Bolton duo it takes two to bring a unique new sound to town.

Sound of Thieves are the newest team making a name for themselves in Manchester's music scene.

Made up of vocalist Phoebe Pope and Jan Bures on bass, the musical pair are on a journey to make it in the UK after landing back in Bolton less than a month ago.

It was a return to home shores for Pheobe who hails from Bromley Cross after moving to Jan's home of Cyprus two years ago.

He said: "We decided to start in Cyprus and develop our sound there. After two years we felt we played to literally everyone and everybody and now want to take on bigger audiences and see what happens.

"We thought we would give them a break from us. We want to perform a lot here now and make a living from it.

"It has been a great experience playing live at different event but now I want to experience what it is like here."

Phoebe added: "Five years ago in Cyprus there wasn't a big music scene then the younger generation went away to university and brought back different musical influences. In our first year we played 110 gigs. It was amazing, incredible."

The couple, both 25 and met while both living and studying in Bolton, did not initially decided to team up their musical skills until three years into their relationship.

Since then they've developed a unique sound which they both find hard to describe but is perhaps best summed up as experimental electro-funk.

The cinematic sound is created with a mix of sampling, live-looping and live instruments, creating unusual covers and unique songs.

Since returning to the North West they have been heading out on to the city centre streets and busking has already got them gigs.

Pheobe said: "People have come up to us after hearing us play to book a gig. It's better than just emailing out asking for gigs sometimes.

"There's a lot of really good talent in Bolton and Manchester. We've only been back a couple of weeks and are already meeting people from a similar community. It's a great way to spread the word and connect with others and we all support each other."

On top of playing live the duo have plans to record an album and have set up a 'go fund me' campaign (www.gofundme.com/soundofthieves)

to purchase and convert a camper van so they can tour the UK and beyond.

Jan added: "There's only so far you can go in Cyprus before you hit the sea, maybe a two to three hour drive, so here there's a lot more to explore."

Their next gig will see them playing alongside fellow Boltonian Janileigh Cohen, as well as The Shakes and Ben Williams, at The Castle Hotel in Manchester's Northern Quarter on August 7, while you can also catch them at the Salford Music Festival this September.
