FOUR intrepid Boltonians are coming face to face with some deadly machinery for the pleasure of television audiences this Sunday.

Fortunately it is all good natured destruction which marks the return to the small screen of popular BBC series Robot Wars.

Hosted by Dara O Briain and Angela Scanlon, and narrator Jonathan Pearce, the show sees teams pit home-made remote-controlled robots against each other in an arena with the hopes of knocking out, or even destroying the opposition, on the road to being crowned Robot Wars Champion 2016.

It returned to the screen last Sunday after a 10 year absence and this week's episode will see a team of amateur engineers from Morris Green proving their mettle in the melee of battles.

Team Dynamic are made up of 17-year-old Team Captain and robot operator Jordan Mann and stepdad 41-year-old Mark Rollins-Mann. Mark's brother-in-law Philip Mann, aged 41, and Philip's dad, Phil Mann, aged 63, make up the rest of the team.

Together they created Chimera which went head-to-head with other robots in the Glasgow-based Wars arena - full of dangerous hazards including fire, spikes, the flipper and the pit.

Philip, a teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Hindley Green, said: "It was an absolutely fantastic experience!

"We have only been building robots for 18 months or so, but Jordan has loved Robot Wars since he was three-years-old.

"We didn't know what we would face when we got there, but you recognise all these people from previous series who are Jordan's heroes!

"It was definitely Jordan's dream come true.

"It was so nerve wracking walking down to the arena and the noise of the crowd, but it was amazing."

The enthusiastic mechanics only had six weeks to build their robotic warrior after applying for a show on a whim and being accepted.

Fortunately they already had a base to work from, having bought a large robot for Jordan, who is studying electrical engineering at Bolton College.

Phil applied expertise learnt from a background in stock car racing to add to and modify the robot in his back garden, with the help of his dad.

Chimera was eventually born out of an "old gas canister", two wheelchair motors and a pair of Ford Focus tyres, with an axe which swings on to its competitors.

They were still working on getting its remote control system working on the day of the competition itself.

Phil added: "I don't think you could get more of an underdog than we were.

"Jordan was one of the youngest drivers in the show and it was also the first time we had tested the robot out in a fight!

"We were up against professional engineers who spent up to £25,000 on their robots. My dad and I did all the work in the back garden and knocked ours together for £1,500. We were prepared to go home in a plastic bag.

"Everyone was lovely though and came over to help. It's like one big family and we've become part of that."

Alongside their competitors, the team also had to face the threat of being attacked by one of the show's famous house robots - Dead Metal.

Fortunately they did not have contend with top house robot, Sir Killalot which was lifted into the stadium on a fork-lift truck and towered up to six-foot-four-tall Phil's waist!

While not revealing the outcome of Sunday's show, the team admit they had so much fun they are now touring the country as part of the Robot Wars Live shows and are in the process of building a Chimera mark II.

Catch team Dynamic and Chimera in action on BBC Two at 8pm.
