BOLTON, Farnworth and social media erupted with pride as star cyclist Jason Kenny scored a second Olympic gold medal in Rio.

Kenny beat team-mate and room-mate Callum Skinner 2-0 in the individual sprint on Sunday evening.

The victory means the former Mount St Joseph School pupil has won more gold medals than Brazil at Rio 2016.

The host nation has won just one gold medal in the judo, as well as two silver and three bronze.

The fantastic fact was posted on Twitter by football writer Richard Jolly.

People were quick to share the tweet in delight.

Damon Hesford ‏wrote: “This is probably the best tweet ever about our town. @TheBoltonNews @boltoncouncil we're joint 21st on medal table!”

The 28-year-old has an opportunity to join Sir Chris Hoy on six gold medals and emulate the Scot's achievement of three golds at one Games by winning Tuesday's Keirin.

"People keep saying I have won five but I don't feel any different from the other day when I only had three. It's not sunk in yet," Kenny said.

"It's a nice club to be part of - but I'll just keep my head down and concentrate on the Keirin."

He won team sprint gold in Beijing, London and Rio - with Skinner and Phil Hindes on Thursday - and has now successfully defended the individual sprint title won four years ago.

And the Team GB star has another title to add to that of Olympic champion - he is the person responsible for Great Britain winning its 250th gold medal in the history of the summer Olympics.

The milestone came just before 10pm BST last night.

It was a cycling event that also brought Great Britain's 200th gold back in 2008, when Ed Clancy, Paul Manning, Geraint Thomas and Bradley Wiggins triumphed in the men's team pursuit in Beijing.

With eight Olympic gold medals between them, Jason and fiancee Laura Trott have earned the title of the golden couple of British sport.

The pair, whose relationship came to light at the London 2012 Games, could add two more medals to their tally on Tuesday as Jason takes on the Keirin and Laura tackles the six-discipline omnium.

While 24-year-old Trott has attracted the attention of sponsors off the track, including Adidas and Prudential, her fiance has failed to gain the same level of support.

The cyclist bemoaned a lack of sponsorship ahead of the Rio Games and described himself as unmarketable.

But he insisted he "wasn't meant to be moaning" after making the comments in an interview on BBC News.

"It was just a fact of life I've come to live with now," he said.

"I'm not very marketable, which is fine. I can't help being a miserable sod. I've just learned to accept that.

"I've come to accept that and I enjoy it. I like flying under the radar a little bit and just get on with what I like doing, which is racing."

His father, Michael, said the lack of attention did not bother the cyclist.

"I don't think Jason's bothered about credit," he said.

"Maybe that's part of the problem. He doesn't sell himself. He's just an ordinary guy.

"So is Laura - they're just an ordinary couple."

They earned the nickname the "golden couple" at London 2012 when they were spotted kissing at the beach volleyball in Horse Guards Parade, sitting a row behind David Beckham.

Some observers joked that British Cycling, renowned for attention to detail, had even come up with a breeding programme.

Jason's father said the couple were "even more golden" following their victories at the Rio Games and had some advice to ensure their home insurance premium does not sky-rocket with their medals haul.

"If I were them I wouldn't keep them at their house," Michael added.

"I don't know if he's got a vault somewhere in Switzerland to keep them in."
