A PERMANENT tribute in the home town of gold medallist Jason Kenny will be discussed by councillors.

The Farnworth Olympian has won two gold medals so far in the Rio games, in the men's individual sprint and the men's team sprint.

Cllr Noel Spencer said he wants something "extra special" created in Farnworth to celebrate Jason's achievements.

The Farnworth councillor added: "I am going to get together with some of my colleagues to make a memorial for his achievements and create something that Farnworthians can be exceptionally proud of.

"It is absolutely wonderful what he has achieved and we are so proud of him.

"For a lad from Farnworth to achieve what he has done is unique. It is brilliant."

OLYMPICS: King Kenny makes it six of the best with a third gold in Rio

The celebratory memorial could be included in the multi million pound regeneration of Farnworth town centre and follow in the footsteps of Bolton One, that has its leisure centre named after the track cyclist, following his 2012 Olympic achievements.

Cllr Spencer said: "We are in the final stages of the redevelopment of Farnworth town centre.

"We have had a number of sporting Farnworthians and we have a building named after Alan Ball in Market Street, so I think with the redevelopment, this is a real opportunity to do something for Jason."

Last night, Kenny kept his cool to win a stunning sixth gold and his peerless fiancee Laura Trott won her fourth as Great Britain dominated the Olympic Velodrome for a third successive Games.

Kenny's third and Trott's second gold of the Rio Olympics saw Britain finish with six gold medals from nine events entered on the track.

Bolton Council said that they are looking at doing something to celebrate Jason's achievements.

Councillor Cliff Morris, Leader of Bolton Council said: “We’re delighted that our own Jason Kenny has now become one of the greatest ever British Olympians.

"He was born and bred in Bolton, attended local schools and has praised his PE teachers for inspiring him to pursue a sporting career.

"We’re extremely proud of his achievements, look forward to welcoming him back to Bolton and hope he will inspire a new generation of sporting talent in the town.”
