AN organisation established to build cohesion, peace and harmony by uniting the people of different backgrounds through the rich colourful cultures and traditions of Africa is celebrating after successfully bidding for lottery funding.

The African Community Association of Bolton has received £10,000 to help build a stronger community.

The money will fund a series of educational workshops, such as ICT classes, cultural music sessions and events for the most vulnerable and isolated members in the community.

The idea is to help those new to the UK and now living in Bolton to learn new communication and social skills as well as building a stronger community by bringing people from different communities together in activities.

Nat Biney, chairman of the association, said: “Everyone was really happy, there was an applause when we found out we had secured the money.

“It will make a big difference to our organisation and benefit the whole community.

“We will be able to put on workshops and help new arrivals to integrate and contribute to the Bolton community, as well as helping them learn about the law and traditions of this country.

“For the young people it is about knowing more about their culture and sharing it.”

The association was formed in 2004 and organises the hugely popular Black History Month to highlight the achievements of people from across the world as well as celebrating the culture and traditions.

Mr Biney said: “Black History Month is a highlight of the year.

“The children really enjoy it and we work closely with schools.

“It is very educational and we are working on the programme for this year.”

He added: “This October we are working with Bolton Wanderers on the Kick Racism out of Football.”

The Big Lottery Fund cash will provide activities over the next year.

Activities planned so far include ICT course, drumming and music using authentic African drums and other percussion instruments and a trip to Knowsley Safari Park at the end of the month.
