LET’S bowl, let’s bowl, let’s rock 'n' roll.
The recent £300,000 refurbishment at Hollywood Bowl, Middlebrook Retail Park in Horwich, prompted us to take a peek into the archives to check out bowling alleys of yesteryear.
Who remembers Hollywood Bowl in Carlton Street?
The £3million all-American bowling centre opened its doors in September 1990, creating 50 new jobs and boasting a Hollywood diner, American-style bar and Hot Vegas slot machine section.
Other bowling alleys in the area included the 22-lane Excel Bowl in Walkden — thought to have opened in 1964 and closed in 1969 — and the 30-lane XS Superbowl, on the East Lancs Road in Worsley.
Today, Hollywood Bowl in Horwich — part of a national chain — is Bolton’s only bowling alley.
Proving that the American theme is alive and well, the recent revamp includes a Hollywood diner, serving American treats such as hot dogs, burgers and freshly made shakes served in milk bottles and retro glasses.
Four new and exclusive VIP lanes have also been created, located in a roped off area, each named after American icons including Marilyn Monroe, Han Solo, Audrey Hepburn and Elvis Presley.
