A LORRY driver has died in a crash on the M61 at Horwich this morning.

A section of the northbound motorway is partially closed following the fatal collision.

Lancashire Police confirmed the driver of a HGV has died.

Police have reported that the vehicle left the carriageway and collided with wooden fencing.

The incident happened about a mile north of the Rivington Services between junctions six and eight.

The driver, the sole occupant of the HGV, was found by passing workmen. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no other vehicles involved in the incident.

The road has now been reopened but two lanes remain closed. 

The crash happened on the M61 between junction 6, Horwich, and junction 8, Chorley, at around 3.10am.

A diversion is in place, with drivers being told to follow the solid black triangle symbol to the A6207, the A6 and the A674, re-joining the motorway at Botany Bay.

Highways England advised drivers to avoid the area.

Traffic is also being affected away from Farnworth towards Preston.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
