AN upcoming religious festival is set to sweep across East Lancashire with plenty of events to take part in.

The Crossroads mission will be between Thursday, September 8 and Sunday, September 11 and will offer activities as part of its school and community outreach plan.

A youth event will be held at Bowley Scout Camp to kick off proceedings on the Thursday, featuring live music along with a bonfire and fireworks.

On Friday afternoon a Superheroes service will be held at Clitheroe’s St James’ Church, and there will also be a school celebration event at Ewood Park in Blackburn, and a commissioning service at Blackburn Cathedral for prayers on Thursday at 2pm.

Families in Blackburn will be able to take part in quiz nights across St Aidan’s Church and St Stephen’s Conservative Club, and on Saturday those in Oswaldtwistle can enjoy the Children’s Art Exhibition at Immanuel.

Residents in Accrington are urged to go to an Invitational Event at Accrington Stanley Football Ground between 7pm and 11pm on Saturday, where they could meet one of the club’s footballers.

There will also be an Altham Angels Go app set up for the weekend for people to hunt angels around St James’ Church in Altham in a similar fashion to the popular Pokemon Go game.

On Sunday residents in Blackburn can attend morning services at St Gabriel’s Church in Browhill Drive, whereas Darwen residents can attend St Barnabas’ Church in Chapel Lane or St Cuthbert’s Church in Earnsdale Road for morning worship.

An Ice Cream Sunday will also be held at St Pauls’ Church in Oswaldtwistle along with a breakfast service at All Saints in Aspen Lane.

Accrington Christians can attend their Sunday services at Trinity Community Church and Woodnook Centre in Christ Church Square or St Pauls’ Church in Plantation Street respectively.

Rev Julian Henderson, diocesan bishop of Blackburn, said: “There are hundreds of Crossroads events taking place across the county.

“The list of events taking place is huge - more than 400 at the last count - and is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of every single person in parishes and schools who has got involved in planning the Crossroads mission.

“Consequently each local community is putting on all sorts of events and you will get a warm welcome.”
