ONE of Bolton's oldest women has celebrated her 105th birthday – and says the secret to a long and happy life is "being a good girl."

Winifred Burgoyne, who is a popular resident at Bakewells Rest Home, has been partying since Sunday to celebrate the stunning milestone.

When asked the secret to her long happy life Mrs Burgoyne laughed: “Being a good girl, and never been bothered with men.”

Birthday celebrations started on Sunday, with the family celebrating at the home, before a special meal at The Tavern on Monday. And yesterday she shared her special birthday with residents, the Mayor of Bolton Lynda Byrne and her family.

She also enjoyed a special performance from the young people at Bolton’s CATS Theatre Group.

Mrs Burgoyne also received a birthday card from the Queen and birthday wishes from Department of Work and Pensions.

The mum of one, grandma of two and great-grandmother of two, added: “It has all been lovely. I won’t forget it in a hurry.”

Mrs Burgoyne worked as a weaver in a mill at the age of 14 for 12 shillings a week.

She married her husband Ronald, who was in the RAF. He sadly died in 2000.

Mrs Burgoyne gave up work to raise her daughter Linda Hardy, who was born two years after getting wed, before returning to work when she was 10.

Mrs Hardy, aged 68, who lives in Over Hulton, said: "It has been an exciting three days, my mum loves life, she loves people and she loved dancing. She met my dad at a dance and said she fell in love with the uniform!

"She still loves going out."

Regular moisturising with Ponds cream ensures she looks younger than her years and Mrs Burgoyne, who only moved in to the home last September, is still very independent.

She wrote memoirs in her late 90s recollecting her experiences, and what she remembers of the two wars.

Mrs Hardy said: “She likes to know what is going and was thrilled when Jason Kenny won in the Olympics. She still gives me advice.”
