POLICE have confirmed more details about an armed robbery at a 24-hour fast food restaurant.

Burger joint McDonald's in Waters Meeting Road in Astley Bridge was targeted at just after midnight on Monday.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "Three men armed with a hammer and an axe threatened staff and stole cash before fleeing the scene.

"Nobody was injured."

It is understood £2,000 was stolen from the restaurant's safe but is not clear if customers were caught up in the commotion.

The franchise reopened recently after closing for a makeover that included the introduction of self-service kiosks.

In June a thief walked off with a clear dessert display stand from the counter, which was later found dumped in the car park and with all of its contents such as brownies and doughnuts missing.

No arrests have been made and detectives continue to investigate.

Anyone with information on the robbery can call police on 101 quoting log 2 of 05/09/16 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
