COMMUTERS have had their cars stolen from a station car park — returning from a day’s work to find them gone.

Thieves have struck at least twice in a fortnight at Daisy Hill Station in Leigh Road, Westhoughton.

One passenger, who did not want to be identified, took to social media to warn fellow train travellers. She had only owned her white 2011-reg Ford Fiesta for six months before it disappeared on September 1.

She said: “When I came out of the train from work, my car wasn’t there. It had a forecourt sticker in the front window that I couldn’t peel off, so maybe whoever took it could not get rid of it either.

Eight days later there was a fleeting sighting of what may have been the stolen Ford.

The commuter said: “My partner saw two cars driving past the car park with no registration plates on the front or rear and one matched the description of my car.

“The other one was a black Ford Focus. That’s all I know.

“If anyone does see my car I would like them to report it to the police.”

Used for 266,000 journeys a year, Daisy Hill Station has an adjacent main ‘top’ asphalt and lined car park that is operated by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and does feature CCTV.

The Ford was stolen from the smaller ‘bottom’ or ‘overflow’ car park across the railway bridge that is not covered by security cameras and, like the station, is managed by Northern Rail.

It is understood a Seat Leon was also stolen from one of the car parks the week before the Ford was taken.

Emma Hession wrote on Facebook: “A lad who gets the train with us had his car stolen from Daisy Hill last week too. When he got off the train his car was there, but there was a problem with his central locking and it wouldn’t start.

“He rang Green Flag (breakdown service) and walked home as they were going to be over an hour. When he went back with Green Flag the car had gone. They reckon professionals did something to his car during day and waited for him to go back to it, then leave.” Jack Speight, chairman of the Friends of Daisy Hill Station, said: “I have not heard of any thefts, but I did report to the police last year a car window being smashed in a break-in.”

A spokesman for TfGM said: “We have had no reports of any recent car thefts from Daisy Hill Station.” Northern Rail and GMP did not reply by the time The Bolton News went to press.
