CHILD genius Sharon Daniels is moving in the right direction – to become the Queen of chess.

The 14-year-old is home after representing England in the European Youth Chess Championships in Prague.

The Bolton School pupil, who was crowned a Mensa Child Genius in 2014, was chosen to represent her her country after winning the English Youth Chess Championship.

Sharon, who lives in Westhoughton, was one of 28 players representing England in the tournament in which 1,500 competitors took part.

She was placed 48th out of 120 having kept her nerve against some strong Russian contestants.

Sharon said: "I felt really honoured to represent my country as it’s quite a prestigious thing to do.

"Before I went I was quite nervous, but when I started to play all my nerves went away and I started to enjoy it."

She added: "I would like to go on to represent England again in the adult World Championships!"

Her success in the competition is the latest in a string of achievements in the game.

She has captained the school chess team for the past five years and has been crowned the British under-11s and under-13s girls' champion.

In July, Sharon was named as the UK (Chess Challenge) Gigafinal Ultima Chess Champion (U14s).

She played in the England Under 11 team and is currently a member of the National Junior Chess Squad.

Sharon has previously represented England in the World Youth Championships in 2013 at Al-Ain, UAE and captained the Manchester Chess Team for Under 9, Under 11s and Under 14s.

In 2014, Sharon was the winner of the Channel 4 TV programme, Mensa Child Genius.
