HUNDREDS of cyclists saddled up for this year's Le Tour De Bolton.

A total of 420 people signed up to take part in the organised ride which went through local beauty spots including Anglezarke.

Cyclists had the choice of two routes.

There was a 60 mile ride which included the infamous climb of The Rake and and took in Crown Point, and a 35 mile ride.

Cyclists arrived to sign in at Smithills School between 8am and 9.30pm before making their way through Bolton, Darwen, Belmont and Burnley.

Chris Kitchin, director of the Le Tour De Bolton Cycle Sportive, said: "Cycling has grown massively and I think it is becoming the new golf, so many people have starting taking up cycling because of the cycling success of our Olympians.

"This year we have had an increase of 100 taking part in the Le Tour De Bolton."

He added: "I am a cyclist because I do it to keep fit. For others it is the sense of freedom, a sociable activity for friends and family to do together.

"Cyclists can try the route used by those taking part in Tour of Britain which came through Bolton. These routes are open to everyone, they are not exclusive."

The event was not a race, with cyclists using it to challenge themselves and enjoy a Sunday ride through some stunning areas of Lancashire.

Rider Craig Gregson, from Leyland, said: "I was looking forward to the challenge and enjoyed the bike ride."

The event is a non-competitive 'cycle challenge' event and a support group for cyclists who needed help or advice.

They enjoyed hot food at the finishing line.
