BOLTON’S Labour MPs have reacted differently to Jeremy Corbyn’s landslide victory in the party’s leadership election.

Mr Corbyn swept to victory over challenger Owen Smith on Saturday, gathering close to 62 per cent of member votes.

His second leadership election win in a year has again prompted divided reactions across the party — including Labour MPs in Bolton.

Bolton South East MP Yasmin Qureshi has kept her cards close to her chest in recent weeks, but after the results she congratulated the Islington MP on an “outstanding victory”.

She added: “When the Labour Party stands together as a united voice, the Tory politics of fear will not prevail.

"At the outset of the Labour leadership I said whoever wins would get my full backing, as has every Labour leader, because united we can take on the Tories.

"Six years of their botched NHS reforms results in the biggest crisis for our health services in a generation; growing inequality in our communities and now in our schools and; hate crime festers.

"There is more that unites our party than divides it, and the country needs our united voice more than ever."

David Crausby, MP for Bolton North East has been clear for some time that he doesn’t not believe Mr Corbyn should be leading the party as he feels he cannot win a general election.

He said he maintains this position but ‘respects’ the decision made by such huge swathes of Labour members.

He said: “I don’t agree with it but that doesn’t mean I don’t respect that Jeremy got 62 per cent of the vote.

“There have often been times when I haven’t agreed with the majority within Labour and that includes in terms of supporting previous leaders, such as Tony Blair.

“I accept the result but it doesn’t change my mind and I do think it will now be more difficult for Labour to win a general election — which could happen at any time.

“In order to win a general election in this country you need to gather support from all sectors of society and I have never believed that Jeremy Corbyn will be able to do that.”

Mr Crausby added that he would like to see the return of elections for deciding the make-up of the shadow cabinet, although it is thought Mr Corbyn could decide to appoint his own top team.
