CHILDREN are learning how to play using their own imaginations to create their own adventures.

Blackrod Primary School is bringing back old fashioned games and fun for pupils to enjoy during their breaks.

The school successfully bid for £10,000 of lottery funding after youngsters sitting on the school council asked for equipment to be used during playtimes and lunchtimes, both in the grounds and inside when the weather was bad.

And there was not a Playstation or Xbox to be found amongst the equipment, instead there were bean bags, hoola hoops, scooters, stilts and bikes and much more.

Amanda Merga, teaching assistant, said: "Children wanted new equipment which they could play with inside and outside.

"When we first got the equipment, we had to prompt the children and get them to try different games because children with the computer games don’t play as youngsters did before

"They were enthusiastic to try different games and a lot of it is learning how to play again."

Children have been playing old fashioned games using bean bags to throw, pass, catch and run with.

Money was also used to train up older children to be play leaders in special workshops, in which they learned about team work and co-operation as well as games to introduce to others.

To celebrate the lottery win and showcase the new equipment, the school invited parents in during a special community day.

They shared their childhood days with the pupils.

Miss Merga said: "Playing like this helps children's imagination and also keeps children fit and healthy and develops their co-ordination.

"Parents remembered the games and equipment they used to play with when they were younger."

She added: "The children really enjoyed it, and are asking if they can invited their parents again this week.

"Everybody really enjoyed and play leaders are enjoying the responsibility."
