SCORES of residents are objecting to building proposals from former Premier League footballer Garry Flitcroft.

The ex-Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers star has submitted plans to Bolton Council to build an extension to a development of flats called Thomas Court in Toppings Green, Bromley Cross — but locals are not happy.

The proposal is to create three additional three-bedroomed apartments within a three-storey extension of the existing complex of 24 flats.

A petition of around 80 names has now been submitted to the council, signed by residents living in nearby streets such as The Crescent, Lord’s Stile Lane and Lower House Walk.

They are said to be ‘incensed’ at the plans and believe they will have a severe impact on their living conditions.

Bromley Cross resident Reverend David Schofield is acting as a spokesman for the residents involved. He said: “If this extension is allowed to be built, there will be an obvious intrusion into neighbouring properties and an invasion of privacy for people living nearby. The height and position of the proposed building, the fact it will be three storeys, means residents living in them will be able to see into all rooms of some of the houses nearby.”

He said that many local residents did not know about the plans until campaigners informed them.

He added: “Some leaflets have been delivered on the subject but many people think they are flyers and throw them away — once we explained what is being proposed they were very concerned and have signed our petition.”

In his planning application, Mr Flitcroft — whose brother David manages Bury Football Club — says the needs of neighbours have been taken into account. The proposals state: “The building size and shape has been dictated by the constraints of the site and careful consideration has been taken not to encroach into the neighbour’s space from a privacy point of view. We have maintained the height at three storeys to keep the scale in keeping with the existing building.”

Residents have got the support of Bolton North East MP David Crausby.
