AN annual parade marking Armistice Day is at risk of being taken off the streets due to a lack of musical support.

For more than 30 years the community of Astley Bridge has turned out to remember those who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars and other conflicts.

The event is organised by the Astley Bridge Legion Club and marches down Blackburn Road to St Paul's Church, however this year there are fears it may not be able to go ahead.

Traditionally taking place on the Sunday, which this year falls on November 13, the club are struggling to find a band or musician to lead the parade.

While the parade was traditionally led by the Bolton Pipe Scottish Band, the band merged with another and no longer marches for the parade, club, based in Belmont Road, chairman Graham Wells explained.

He added: "One year we had a lone piper but unfortunately they are not well so can't play for us this year.

"We have tried our best to get a band just to march with us round to the church. We tried a lot of local bands but they are all booked up. It is a real shame because it means so much to the schools and the wider community."

"It has been taking place for over 30 years. Every year we have the schools from the district march with us and the scouts clubs. It is a very well attended event and there is a service at the church where names are read and it's followed by a concert.

"It is our best day of the year and we are trying our best to keep it going."

Remembrance celebrations are one of the busiest times of year for the borough with thousands of people turning out for events.

While Astley Bridge sets off on its parade, in Victoria Square and Horwich town centre members of Royal British Legion lay wreaths at war memorials alongside respective Mayors and local dignitaries following a parade through the towns.

Parades also set off in Westhoughton, Farnworth and Kearsley - to name but a few.

As a result competition to secure a band to help lead residents and community groups through the streets can be tough.

In the run up to next month Astley Bridge Legion Club is now appealing for a band or musician to come forward who could lead its short procession for the community.
