SCHOOLCHILDREN in Horwich proved they are first class citizens when they went out to help the homeless.

Youngsters in class 8B at Lever Park School in Horwich were so moved after reading the novel Stone Cold, by Robert Swindells, which explores the issue of homelessness, they were determined to do something practical to help and let some of society's most vulnerable know that people do care.

The group spent a day making up packed lunches of sandwiches, crisps and cake as well as a drink before travelling with teachers to Manchester to distribute the food with a little note stating: 'We are representing Lever Park School. We hope you enjoy your wonderful food especially made by us. Enjoy.'

Pupils handed out the food and found out more about the people who are forced to live on the streets.

Owen Wilde, aged 12, said: “Next time, I’d like to take some dog food because some of the homeless people have a dog.”

Corey Chadwick, aged 12, added: “It made me feel good because I was helping.”

Jo Williams, learning mentor at Lever Park School, said: "Students from Lever Park Academy expressed an interest in helping the homeless after reading the book Stone Cold, so as part of 8B's volunteering lessons we made sandwich packs and took some donated clothing to distribute to the homeless in Manchester.

"The clothing and packed lunches were gratefully received by all and the quote of the day from one gentleman was: 'thank you so much, you are educating these young people to care for other people, that is fantastic, thanks so much.'

"It was a very special day, and one of the class said he wanted to save some money up to donate next time.

"We have also been volunteering at Croft Fisheries, using the boys' horticulture skills by clearing paths, pruning plants and making the fishing lake a nicer place to be.

"The teamwork and dedication shown by these young people has been outstanding and I am very proud to work with them."
