A FIRE destroyed the roof of an extension and shed in Walkden in the early hours of this morning.

Three fire engines from Farnworth and Agecroft were called out to Hodge Road at 12.45am where a shed was on fire.

The blaze spread from the shed to an extension of a house, destroying the roof.

It also reached a neighbouring causing some damage to the roof.

Residents from the property were already outside when crews arrived, after being alerted to the fire by the smoke alarms.

Farnworth crew manager Michael O'Neill said: “The shed fire had gone up quite quickly and rapidly spread to the roof of the first property and then spread to the neighbouring property.

“The son of the home owners had seen the fire and heard the alarm and alerted mum and dad to get out of the house.

“We had to remove the rest of the roof of the extension but the fire only got under a few tiles of the property next door.

“The crew did a good job stopping the fire spreading to the neighbouring property.”

No one was hurt in the incident and the cause of the fire is not known.

Fire crews confirmed they will be returning to the homes later to carry out safety checks.
