FANS will be turning on their phones to Light Up Gigg Lane during the Bolton vs Bury match as a tribute to the late Zak Vali.

Bury FC agreed to remember the football-mad teenager in the 15th minute of tonight's encounter against their local rivals as a nod to the youngster's age when he died.

Sport-loving Zak - son of boxing promotor Asif Vali - lost his year-long battle with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, in September 2015.

Supporters will be encouraged to use the screens and torches on their phones and other gadgets as a mark of remembrance to the Rivington and Blackrod High School pupil a third of the way through the first half of the match being screened live on Sky Sports.

Gordon Sorfleet, Bury FC's press office, said: "I saw something on Twitter the other day and said to the lad: Send us an image of Zak and we'll use it on the big screen.

"It just came from Twitter. I thought it was a good idea.

"In the 15th minute, everyone will switch on their phones and Light Up Gigg Lane."

Mr Vali said on Facebook: "Tonight is Bury vs Bolton - local derby and all Bolton tickets for away sold out.

"I have my tickets with kids. Don't forget Bury FC have decided to Light Up Gigg Lane in Zak memory on the 15th minute.

"Great gesture for Zak."

Family pays tribute to "bubbly, smiling" Zak Vali who died aged 15

It was the Bolton Wanderers Fans Facebook group who organised via social media the original Light Up The Macron tribute when Bolton played Birmingham at home just days after Zak died.
