A BABY boy who fell from the first floor window of a house had a miracle escape.

The terrifying accident happened in Woodbridge Drive in Tonge Moor on Sunday afternoon, when the one-year-old fell from the bedroom window into the front garden.

Neighbours reported seeing the baby bleeding after the incident and he was taken to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Despite falling from such a height, police have confirmed that the baby has since been released from hospital, having avoided any serious injuries.

A police spokesman said: “We were called to an address in Woodbridge Drive at about 1.25pm on Sunday after reports that a baby had fallen from a first floor window.

“The baby boy was taken to hospital, but we can confirm he has since been released with no serious injuries.

“We have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, but no one has been arrested.”

The horrifying moment was witnessed by the daughter of Angela McLelland, who lives close to the house where the accident happened.

Nine-year-old Megan said she saw the baby and several other children seated on the window sill of the wide-open first floor bedroom window as she walked past the house.

Mrs McLelland said: “She shouted to the children to get back in the room and to stop hanging out of the window. She said the baby was standing up on the windowsill.

“The baby started slipping out of the window sideways and then fell out on to the ground.

“Megan threw down her mobile phone and ran over and picked up the baby and it was screaming.”

“When I heard what was going on I went running up and my daughter told me that the baby had fallen out of the window.”

“She said he was bleeding heavily from his mouth.”

Mrs McLelland’s son then called an ambulance, which arrived and took the child to hospital.

Describing the scene in the aftermath of the incident, the 45-year-old said: “It was just absolute chaos, there was a lot of screaming from inside, one woman tried to leave, but they told her to get back inside.”

She added: “It’s a terrible accident and it really shouldn’t have happened, children should not be hanging out of windows.”

It is believed that the baby who fell was not living at the house and was part of a family who were visiting.

A party had taken place at the address on Saturday, but neighbours believe the baby’s family had gone away and returned the next day when the accident happened.

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, had attended the party at the house on Saturday.

She said: “I went along for a bit and there were lots of people there, there were lots of children.

“The next day I saw the police had taped the area off and an officer came to my house and told me a one-year-old baby had fallen from the window. It must have been so awful for the family.”

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics had attended the scene and taken a patient to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
