THE new Bishop of Bolton has been warmly welcomed into the community.

The Rt Rev Mark Ashcroft officially started his appointment yesterday with his first service.

More than 100 people of all ages and full choir packed into Bolton Parish Church yesterday morning for the event.

Addressing the pews, Bishop Mark spoke of the future of the diocese and its role within the community.

Cllr John Walsh, a church warden at the parish church, said: “It went extremely well. It was a joyful occasion at an important time with the church advent, and a wonderful time to welcome our new bishop.

“The message was that at the start of the new year there is the opportunity for us all to refocus our attention on our family, our church family and Bolton family.

“Looking forward we want to be more positive in our outlook.

“Bolton Parish Church is at the heart of the community and the town centre, but not many people realise we are here, have not visited or don’t know how much we have going on, not just worship but events and concerts.

“The bishop felt it was a wonderful start to his ministry of Bolton. He has got a full itinerary and many churches who want to welcome him. He’s come at a busy time of year!”

The service was attended by children from Canon Slade, Bolton Parish and Bishop Bridgeman schools and the Mayor, Cllr Lynda Byrne.

Members of the congregation who celebrated their confirmation earlier in the week attended for their first communion.

Bishop Mark, who has three children, served as the Archdeacon of Manchester and Residentiary Canon of Manchester Cathedral since 2009.

The 61-year-old was consecrated at York Cathedral in October.

Cllr Walsh added: “As a faith leader, he has very strong links links with the Bolton Interfaith Council and can held bring together the whole community, not just Christian but other faiths as well.

“It is very important to bring together everyone in the community so we can learn to live together.

“The parish church is delighted to host his first service. His predecessor celebrated his first service here and his last and, while we don’t want to say goodbye to him yet, it’s nice to have Bishop Mark start here, too.”

Bolton Parish Church is holding several festive events from December 12,including Christmas tree sing-along with carols, community carol service with Eagley Band, and carol service by candlelight.
