SPENT up after Black Friday and hoping for more bargains when it comes to preparing your Christmas dinner?

According to Good Housekeeping's annual Christmas dinner price index, the cost of Christmas dinner has dropped more than 10 per cent since 2009.

The magazine survey found hosts can feed eight people for under £20, or £2.48 a head, this year.

The figure, based on the price of 11 Christmas dinner essentials across 10 supermarkets, is a 10.9 per cent drop since 2009 when the magazine began tracking the cost.

Of the 11 foods, six have gone down in price, including turkey, and three have stayed the same as last year.

Only the prices of Christmas pudding and mince pies have increased.

Aldi was the cheapest supermarket for buying the entire list at £22.03 - 11% cheaper than last year's winner Iceland, followed by Lidl in second place at £24.57.

Good Housekeeping consumer director Caroline Bloor said: "Supermarket shoppers will be relieved to see Christmas essentials are still so affordable.

"While five of the supermarkets have cheaper baskets this year, it's mainly thanks to the big decrease in the cost of these groceries at Aldi and Lidl that the overall basket is significantly cheaper.

"So think carefully where you shop or you could end up paying twice as much."
