AN ARREST was made and a pub car park sealed off after a man was stabbed on a main road.

The victim – in his early 50s – was attacked at 6.45pm on Tuesday in front of the Post Office in Tonge Moor Road, Tonge Moor.

Staff at the Co-op supermarket opposite went over to help the injured man and dialled 999.

He was conscious and breathing when attended to by an ambulance crew and a doctor in a rapid response vehicle.

The paramedics took the man to Royal Bolton Hospital with what a North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said were "slash wounds" that did not penetrate internally.

Locals said there had been an argument between a man and a woman had broken out before the stabbing happened.

Chesca Marone said on Facebook: "The fact somebody has been stabbed right outside my house makes me feel very unsafe.

"I hope whoever has been hurt is OK and hope whoever did it gets caught."

As part of the investigation police taped off the car park of the Starkie Arms pub down the road and a scene of crime officer was seen checking the industrial pubs at the back of the pub yesterday morning.

In a statement, a police spokeswoman said: "Police were called shortly before 6.50pm yesterday to Tonge Moor Road to reports of a stabbing.

"On arrival officers found a man in his 50s who had suffered stab wounds.

"He was taken to hospital and has since been discharged."

A 50-year-old man was arrested by police on suspicion of wounding with intent and remains in police custody.
