TWO people have been commended for trying to resuscitate Samantha Derbyshire as she lay fatally injured on the hard shoulder of the M61.

Coroner Alan Walsh said that Kimberley Tipping and Oliver Beard should be given a commendation from Greater Manchester Police after they pulled over on the hard shoulder to try to help.

Mrs Tipping was on her way home after her shift with Jet2 at Manchester Airport while Mr Beard was on his way to Glasgow. Both swerved to miss Miss Derbyshire’s stationary car and pulled over on the hard shoulder to help.

As Mr Beard called the emergency services, Mrs Tipping came running from her car to help.

Mr Beard said: “I saw a lady running past my car and I told her to stop and put on a high visibility jacket because it was dangerous.“We saw the car under the cab of the lorry and looked but we could not find anyone in there.”

The inquest heard how the pair found Miss Derbyshire further down the hard shoulder and carried out resuscitation on her until the emergency services arrived.

Mr Walsh said: “Without any consideration for their own safety they took action to try and save Samantha’s life. What they did was unbelievable and for me quite humbling to realise that people driving down the motorway at that time in the morning would stop and do that on a live motorway.”
